Mauricio Pochettino’s weird reason for starting Son vs Chelsea27th November 2018
Tottenham 3 Chelsea 1
Tottenham’s latest Premier League game saw them take on an unbeaten Chelsea side.
Tottenham were enjoying their best start to a Premier League season heading into the Chelsea game.
But, under Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea were the only side in England to be unbeaten in all competitions.
Despite this, Tottenham would take an early lead thorough Dele Alli in the 8th minute.
Harry Kane would double Spurs lead just eight minutes later and Son Heung-Min would make it three to Tottenham shortly after half-time.
Olivier Giroud would pull one back for Chelsea in the 85th minute, however, Spurs would still come away with all three points.
Pochettino’s weird reason for Son starting over Lucas
One slightly surprising selection for Tottenham vs Chelsea was Son starting over Lucas.
Lucas had started all 12 of Tottenham’s previous Premier League games this season and had scored four and assisted one.
Lucas has been playing largely as a secondary-striker or as an attacking midfielder and has been doing a solid job of it.
However, the Brazilian would be dropped in place of Son for the vital clash with Chelsea.
After the game Spurs boss Marico Pochettino gave a slightly weird reason for picking Son over Lucas:
“It’s about intuition. Sometimes in football, you smell someone.”

While ‘smelling someone’ is a bit of a strange reason for picking a player, it did pay off as Son got on the score sheet and Spurs came away with all three points.
Tottenham now face an all-important Champions League tie with Inter Milan on Wednesday.
