Arsenal reignite pursuit of RB Leipzig star26th May 2018
As per a report from Swedish outlet Expressen, Premier League giants Arsenal are once again expressing an interest in the signature of RB Leipzig attacking midfielder/winger Emil Forsberg.
Forsberg made the move to the Red Bull Arena in 2015, having been named Sweden’s midfielder of the year in 2014 for his exploits with Malmo.
Though his abilities have been common knowledge for some time, the 26-year-old moved to a level that few thought him capable of over the course of the 2016/17 campaign, racking up 8 goals and a league-high 19 assists as RB Leipzig clinched second place in the Bundesliga in their debut campaign in the German top flight.
Unsurprisingly, Forsberg’s stellar showings quickly alerted a number of Europe’s top clubs to his talents, with all of Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester United having been linked with moves for the Swede last summer.
In the end, the 34-time capped international stayed put, but majorly struggled to replicate his sensational form from Leipzig’s debut Bundesliga campaign, with a number of injury problems having restricted Forsberg to just 15 league starts this past season.
Nevertheless, if reports across Europe are to be believed, then Forsberg’s struggles over the last 9 months have not deterred some of European football’s biggest clubs from expressing an interest in his services once again.
As per the aforementioned report from Expressen, all of Arsenal, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are keen on securing a deal for the Swede over the coming months, with representatives from the trio having already held respective meetings with Hasan Cetinkaya, Forsberg’s agent.
The report also adds that Arsenal boss Unai Emery is the man behind the Gunners’ renewed interest in Forsberg, with the Spaniard said to be a long-term admirer of the talents of the 26-year-old.
However, RB Leipzig, for their part, are keen to tie Forsberg down to a new contract, with Sporting Director Ralf Rangnick having having repeatedly insisted that the versatile midfielder is not for sale under any circumstances.
